THE
PHUNKY HIP-HOP DRUMMER by Bob
Ernest
This 80 page book does exactly what the title implies. It begins with
basic beats, syncopated patterns, adds beats using the hi-hat, and then
adds new rhythms. All of the patterns and their variations are done
in single measure exercises and then are combined into two bar grooves.
The book ends with six play-along songs that are recorded both with
drums and without drums.
The
combination of the CD, which demonstrates the various patterns. and
the play-along grooves, makes this an instruction book that comes alive
with practical application for performance.
Short
on text but long on beats, this book/CD pack contains sections on:
The
Basic Beat / Syncopation, Accents, Syncopated Patterns, Two-Bar Grooves,
The Hi-Hat / Hi-Hat Openings / Snare Drum Variations / 16th Notes /
Thirtysecond Notes / Half-Time Shuffle / Right Hand Variations / Advanced
Hi-Hat Alternatives

THE DRUM PERSPECTIVE
by Peter Erskine (©1998)
Another favorite. This is a beautifully done, very insightful and inspiring
work from the incomparable Peter Erskine. Not only does this package
contain eleven of Peter's finest performances, with full charts, but
it includes more helpful advice and food for thought than you're likely
to find anywhere. Chapters include: timekeeping, orchestration on the
drum set, improvising on the drum set, free playing, advanced concepts,
meeting a piece of music for the first time, teacher/student relationship,
and more. The songs featured on the CD include: But Is It Art? from
'Sweet Soul' by Peter Erskine, Straphangin' from 'American Diary' by
Mike Mainieri, L.A. Stomp from 'From Kenton to Now' by Peter Erskine
& Richard Torres, Know Where You Are from 'Music for Large and Small
Ensemble by Kenny Wheeler, Babe of the Day from 'Start Here' by Vince
Mendoza, Not A Word and Erskoman from 'Motion Poet' by Peter Erskine,
Crackdown from 'Blood on the Floor' by Mark-Anthony Turnage, Elvin's
Mambo from 'The First Decade' by The Bob Mintzer Big Band, Not an Exit
from 'Nothing to Hide' by Otmaro Ruiz and November from the album of
the same name by J. Abercrombie, M. Johnson and Peter Erskine. The Drum
Perspective is like a series of private lessons that can be enjoyed
anywhere, at any time. It is not written for drummers only, however!
It is also designed for other instrumentalists and vocalists who work
with drummers, bandleaders, educators and students of music, and anyone
curious about the art of rhythm. This book takes years of playing and
thousands of miles of travel and turns it into an enlightening lesson
on life.
