WEST AFRICAN RHYTHMS FOR DRUMSET

by Royal Hartigan (©1995)

If you're at all interested in tribal drumming and drumming from West Africa, you simply have to own this book. It's by far the most interesting and enlightening book on the subject. Ghana, West Africa is the source for many rhythms throughout the world. In this book, ethnomusicologist and drumset artist Royal Hartigan, with the help of Ghanaian Master Drummers, Abraham Adzenyah and Freeman Donkor, have adapted West African rhythms to the drum set. Concentrating mainly on four rhythmic groups, Sikyi, Adowa, Gahu, and Akom, each chapter introduces the traditional instruments and rhythms of each style. This is the real authentic thing. Each drum and bell pattern is adapted to its appropriate voice on the drumset. This step-by-step organic approach allows each drumset example to increase your rhythmic understanding of West African music. The accompanying CD features a Ghanaian drumming ensemble as well as numerous drumset applications. These rhythms will challenge you and inspire you. The text is fascinating, along with the countless photographs, and I guarantee you'll enjoy this book immensely. There's 100 pages of text and nearly 40 recorded examples. According to Rick Mattingly/Modern Drummer (Jan. 1996) - "The text is especially informative, taking much of the mystery out of rhythms that have fascinated drummers for many years." Highly recommended.

RHYTHMIC ILLUSIONS by Gavin Harrison (©1996)
This is one of the most unique drum books to come along in a long time (and one of the most challenging!) This book/CD package easily breaks down the mystery behind subdivisions, rhythmic modulation, rhythmic scales and beat displacement. The transition from mathematics to musicality is done in an easy and systematic approach. This book will likely turn your brain upside down for a while, but it will pay off and you'll have a whole new understanding of rhythm. As stated by Terry O'Mahoney in Percussive Notes (June 1997) - "Many of today's leading drummers (Colaiuta, Weckl, Novak) use these concepts to expand their vocabularies, and Harrison has done an excellent job in 'demystifying' the learning process." If you're looking for some new ways to turn your beats around gain a new level of rhythmic understanding, this is the one book you need to get a hold of. 72 pages.

RHYTHMIC PERSPECTIVES by Gavin Harrison (©2000)
This very highly anticipated book/CD package is a necessary sequel to 'Rhythmic Illusions' released in 1996. While the cranium stretching 'Rhythmic Illusions' addressed beat displacement, subdivisions, rhythmic scales, and rhythmic modulations, this installment, aptly sub-titled 'A Multidimensionsl Study of Rhythmic Composition', is "a book on the very cutting edge of drum concepts and offers exercises to further develop the study of rhythmic illusions and multidimensional rhythm. These concepts are the "mind rudiments" for a unique way of thinking about rhythmic structure, rhythmic composition, and higher rhythmic awareness."

Author Gavin Harrison states - "I've always been interested in researching the possibilities of how far out I could go on the instrument. (Given the limitations of being only human). I decided to leave out the most instinctive challenge of the instrument, which is "How fast can I go?" This always seemed more athletic than musical to me, and although some of this material might appear very technical and mathmetical, my aim is to improve my creative options from a musical standpoint rather than a chops one.

It's difficult to sum up the material presented here without speaking in fluent "drummer" language, but some of the topics addressed are: groups of threes or fives in sixteenth notes - in 4/4 & also in various other time signatures - then with mixed stickings - then with shifting meters! Then throw in some foot ostinatos to play that over, throw in some polyrhythms (i.e. 3:3, 4:3, 5:3, 7:3), put it over a changing 3/4, 4/4, 5/4 and 7/4 phrase and you get the picture! Fortunately this book is more engaging and fun than it is difficult to understand. The concepts should be fairly to understand for anyone with a moderate understanding of subdivisions and time signatures, but pulling this stuff off is another thing all together! HIGHLY recommended - especially to those familiar with the 'Rhythmic Illusions' predecessor.

MASTERING THE ART OF BRUSHES by Jim Hazilla

This book is divided into three sections: CONCEPTS, PATTERNS, and TECHNIQUE. CONCEPTS provides the theory behind the practice of playing with brushes. Refer to the CONCEPTS section when practicing the PATTERNS and TECHNIQUE sections. Understanding the concepts can help you develop greater skill in improvisation, balance out one-hand dominance, and allow you to explore and create patterns that are new and personal.

PATTERNS contains patterns for brush movement and technique. Approach and study the patterns as you would a classic rock beat or a traditional samba. The strokes are part and rhythm specific. If your left hand is supposed to play circles emphasizing beats two and four, then think ofthat as your backbeat. Don't change the shape or the rhythm.

TECHNIQUE is a series of technical exercises modeled after the genius of Alan Dawson and Joe Morello. The exercises are designed to help you develop the strokes and the overall flow. When practicing them, I recommend that you combine the suggested patterns with your own patterns. Even though you may think you have mastered a certain stroke, exploring and working through various exercises will help you expand the improvisational nature of your filling and comping.

At all times be mindful of the sound you are achieving.

INCLUDES: 10 Concepts, Brush Strokes Key, Drum & Bass Play-Along Tracks, Ballads, Medium Tempos, Up Tempo, Special Strokes, Bass Play-Along Tracks, Rhythm Table for Wrist Development, Coordination Exercises, Nine Exercises, Discography, Books & Videos and more.

CONVERSATIONS IN CLAVE by Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez

THE ULTIMATE TECHNICAL STUDY OF FOUR-WAY INDEPEMDENCE IN AFRO-CUBAN RHYTHMS

BOOK w/CD REG. $24.95 EL03823-CT $21.00

This book was born after experiencing the combination of a long career as a performing artist mixed with vital experiences as a teacher in different parts of the world. From the debut of my teaching I found a big wall: many of the books regarding Afro-Cuban styles were books about patterns only. Students were able to learn the correct patterns but then they didn't know what to do with them. Some recent publications have remedied this shortcoming, but once students learned these patterns they developed no freedom to move within, or play fills, or do anything but play the patterns themselves. This is a long way from what playing Afro-Cuban music - or any music - really is.

In this book I employ the same concepts as those of Jim Chapin, but here I apply it to the world of Afro-Cuban music. This book will assist you in gaining the coordination you will need to study and master the many different rhythms of the Afro-Cuban styles, and to feel free when playing them. As you become more familiar with these rhythms, these studies will also allow you to hear and create variations from the rhythmic foundations of the Afro-Cuban tradition.

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF READING RHYTHMS
by Gary Hess (©1997)

270 pages! This is an absolute favorite new book. Gary Hess, from Musician's Institute, has collected hundreds of the charts used in the reading classes at MI and put them all in one book. The reading goes from the most basic rhythms up to some pretty challenging, complex stuff. Tempo range charts (from 40 to about 140 BPM) are included with every exercise as well as spaces for the date, so your progress through the book can easily be measured. These pages are useful enough if used as they are on the page but, combined with creative applications, these pages are a virtual gold mine of ideas and exercises. (Try this book out with Gary Chester/New Breed type exercises and you'll be occupied for years!) If a drummer takes the time to work through ALL the tempo ranges given, this book will double your worth - you're time & feel, at EVERY tempo range will increase exponentially. Every musician should own this book.

This book was written so you can bring these various styles of music to the practice room in preparation for your next performance. Each style is presented here so that you may listen, read, study and play the chart. DRUM CIRCLE SPIRIT / FACILITATING HUMAN POTENTIAL THROUGH RHYTHM

by Arthur Hull (1998)
"Arthur Hull has taken a giant step in contributing to our understanding of what is real, not only about drum circles, but also about the evocative power of the drum, and how to use it as a necessary tool of communication empowerment, bringing people together,, sharing very positive vibrations amongst all participants regardless of their color, creed, religion or gender.

This is the first comprehensive literature that deals with the subject of Drum Circle Spirit, the role of the facilitator - who, no matter how enthusiastic or charasmatic... a person he or she may be, must understand the language of the drum. This does not simply mean knowing many rhythms nor having the ability to display many rhythmic patterns simultaneously. The ability to lead a drum circle depends largely on the personality of the facilitator. A facilitator is like a conductor of a symphony orchestra who may not know how to play all the instruments in his orchestra, yet through his training as a conductor must develop a skill as well as the knowledge to guide the players through the rendition of a musical piece effectively and harmoniously from the beginning to the end.

I strongly recommend this book to all who are interested in personal healing, learning unique methods of facilitating, becoming familiar with new vocabularies introduced by Arthur, and in healing our planet." - Babatunde Olatunji, New York City, March, 1998

Chapter ONE: Rhythmaculture, Circles, and Drum Circle Etiquette / Chapter TWO: Facilitators / Chapter THREE: Facilitation Exercises and Drum Circle Games / Chapter FOUR: Reading & Respecting the Circle / Chapter FIVE: Addressing the Circle / Chapter SIX: Event Format / Chapter SEVEN: Arthurian Terminology / Chapter EIGHT: Facilitating in Specific Populations / Chapter NINE: The Mission / Chapter TEN: Tools and Techniques of Facilitators / Chapter ELEVEN: Elements to Facilitate in a Drum Circle.
