FUSION DRUM STYLES by James Morton

This book is divided into three parts. Part one is a compilation of basic rhythms idiomatic to current drumming. TYPES OF COORDINATION: When one moves from playing the snare drum to playing the drum set, three additional types of coordination come into play. Whereas, in snare drumming one is concerned primarily with hand-to-hand coordination (how one hand relates to the other in applying various rhythms, dynamics, and stickings), now, hand-and-foot coordination, independence and spatial coordination, must be considered. Hand-and-foot coordination is basically how one limb relates to the other three, and how they all relate to each other at the same time.

Independence is traditionally described as the ability to execute two or more counter rhythms with either hands or feet. Regarding hand-to-hand coordination, hand-and-foot coordination, and independence, there are many fine instructional books one can study to sharpen these particular skills.

Spatial coordination can be defined as a discernment of the distance relationship of the drums and cymbals to each other and how one applies the three other types of coordination to that relationship. This concept is similar in nature to the way a mallet player must discern the distance between notes as he plays them. Developing spatial coordination is one of the aims of this book. 42 pages plus audio.

RIGHT ON!!!! I've got to say this is one of the best "do it yourself" drum books I've seen in a long time. It truly gives you everything you need to get going on a kit - and in a manner that's easier to understand than many methods. There's basic reading instruction, hand and foot coordination exercises to get you going on the kit (always the hardest part for beginners,) basic blues and rock beats, drum fills, all the necessary stuff you'll find in other beginner drum books, but in the clearest way. If you need a good beginner drum book, this is a VERY good one. If it came with a CD it would be an EXCELLENT one!

DRUM WISDOM by Bob Moses (©1984)

This book from the Modern Drummer Publications library is considered one of the great drum books. It's only 47 pages long but every page hosts a wealth of information. Bob addresses several essential ideas and gives dozens of fun rhythmic "toys" to play with. Bob discusses organic drumming, movement, combining points and the very cool groove canon - a two part percussion line playing "in rounds" (in 9/4 no less), it's very interesting! This is a short book easily worth the money that will give you lots of ideas.
