LESSONS
WITH THE GREATS, VOLUME 1
by
John Xepoleas
(©1992)
The Lessons With the Greats series is a really fun way to get a look
behind some of your favorite drummers and get turned onto other great
drummers you may not be familiar with. Each drummer takes a dozen (or
so) pages and turns it into a private lesson. In addition, all the written
examples in the lessons are performed on the CDs. In Volume 1: Dave
Weckl examines triplet hand/foot exercises, double strokes on the drum
set and a six-stroke fill exercise / Steve Smith explains his concept
for developing linear fills, triplet feels and drum set applications
/ Terry Bozzio offered up his ostinato patterns using Swiss triplets
and 16th note doubles as well as melodies around the toms. / Kenny Aronoff
shows us hand/foot exercises using doubles and reversing the hands/cymbal
patterns in sequence. / There are reggae feels and great bass drum exercises
from Gregg Bissonette. / The incomparable Peter Erskine shares his conceptual
wisdom on spacing and clarity, plus other, very useful insights. / John
Xepoleas shares half-time shuffles, Funk Mozambique and triplets on
the bass drum. Fun!

LESSONS
WITH THE GREATS, VOLUME 2
by John
Xepoleas (©1995)
This book is the equivalent of taking odd time, progressive rock lessons
with Mike Portnoy, Neil Peart and Tim "Herb" Alexander (from Dream
Theater, Rush & (ex-)Primus respectively), learning cool grooves from
studio greats Chris Parker, Will Kennedy and Jonathan "Sugarfoot"
Moffett. Neil Peart explains Leave That Thing Alone and The Drum Also
Waltzes, along with giving us his philosophy about developing fills.
Will Kennedy shares three approaches to developing a strong groove
with a good feel, musical warm-ups and "even odd meters". Tim Alexander
displays some hi-hat stuff, tom grooves and provides the inside scoop
on his unique bass drum approach. "Sugarfoot" Moffett writes out and
explains the "locomotive" groove and pulls out a funky blues shuffle.
Mike Portnoy teaches 5/4 time, seven, 9/8 and odd approaches to 4/4.
Chris Parker, with the most inspiring segment (in our opinion), shares
some really fun exercises (for lack of a better word), and does some
really tasty playing on the included charts/audio portion. Finally,
John Xepoleas gives a lesson in polyrhythmic fills.
